The Ramayana is an Indian epic that's very well known all over Southeast Asia. This is an excerpt from the scene where Shinta was captivated by seeing a golden deer (a demon in disguise) and pleaded Rama to capture it for her. Unlike most of the other dances I've uploaded, it's not from Bali. This dance is from Central Java and belongs to the Wayang Wong genre.

This classical Javanese dance comes from the court of Yogyakarta. It depicts a young woman's desire to always look her best. The dancers seen here belongs to the Yayasan Siswa Among Beksa which was created by the brother of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX in 1952. The dance foundation's goal is to preserve and develop the classical court dance of Yogyakarta and the Mataram style.

In this 4th excerpt from the Ramayana, Anoman finally finds Shinta in the kingdom of Alengka. He gives Rama's ring to Shinta as instructed and in return, Shinta gives Anoman an ornament to give to Rama. There is also a bit of flirtation between Anoman and Trijhata (Rahwana's niece) who happens to be protecting Shinta. This hints of their eventual marriage later on.

One of the best known Balinese dances, this dance was created in 1925 by the well-known I Nyoman Mario. The name of the dance is referring to the "seated" position which predominates this dance. Dancers though, jokingly call it "Tari Kebyar Jongkok" which is humorous if you understand Indonesian ;).

This Balinese dance was coreographed in 1989 by Swasthi Widjaya Bandem and the music was written by I Nyoman Windha. This dance was premiered by 70 dancers at the opening of PERWOSI ("Persatuan Wanita Olahraga Seluruh Indonesia" translated: "Association of Women in Athletics throughout Indonesia").

In this 3rd excerpt from the Ramayana, Rama devises a plan to rescue Shinta and chooses the white monkey, Anoman, to search for her in Rahwana's kingdom Alengka. This scene is particularly nice because the breathtaking Hindu temple Prambanan in Java is directly in the background of this video.

This Balinese dance depicts a group of swamp birds ("Manuk"=bird, "Rawa"=swamp) from the "Wana Parwa" story of the Indian epic Mahabharata. Originally, this dance was part of a larger Mahabharata dance drama called "Bale Gala-Gala" which was performed in the Bali Arts Festival of 1980. The dance was coreographed by I Wayan Dibia and music was written by I Wayan Beratha.

This relatively new Balinese dance was created in 1993 Swasthi Widjaya Bandem and the music was written by I Nyoman Windha. Like the well known tari Pendet, this dance is a welcoming dance performed to greet visitors.

This Balinese dance was created by I Wayan Dibia in 1985. It tells the story of Dewi Sekartaji who disguised herself as a male rider, along with her consort, to search for her lover, Raden Panji Inu Kertha Pathi who diseappeared from his castle. Inspiration for this dance came from the Sanghyang Jaran, a unique sacred dance that involves fire-walking.

In this excerpt, the bird Jatayu sees the demon Rahwana abducting Shinta and attempts to save her. Rahwana is too strong and mortally wounded Jatayu. Rama and his brother Laskamana finds the wounded Jatayu while searching for Shinta. Before he dies, Jatayu reveals that Rahwana is the one who abducted Shinta.

This dance is based on the Panji cycle of stories from Java. It depicts princess Candrakirana disguised as a man to search for her beloved prince Panji Inu Kertapati. This dance was created in 1942 by I Nyoman Kaler.

The Gabor is closely related to another Balinese dance called Pendet. There's a full version of Pendet on Youtube and if you compare the two, you'll see that they are rather similar. Both Gabor and Pendet are welcoming dances that were originally meant for religious and sacred events. This dance was first created in 1969 by I Gusti Raka and later revised by I Wayan Beratha in 1970.

This legong tells of two brothers, King Subali and Sugriwa. The two lived in peace until they both desired magic brought by Dewi Anjani. This magic was thrown by Dewi Anjani's father into a river that transforms humans into monkeys. Subali and Sugriwa were transformed and not recognizing each other, they fought. Neither brothers won the fight and finally recognized each other.
